Female nude study (knee portrait) in landscape on a lakeside. Nude standing, en face, slight side view, both arms raised and reaching for tree branches. Head raised, gaze turned to the sky. The nude stands in a forest, in the background a blue lake with steeply sloping wooded shores.

This oil sketch on cardboard likely served as preparation for the painting "Nude study on lake Wolfgang 1911" and has a number of parallels with an other sketch (also on cardboard), which has also survived, as well as the final painting (on canvas) (see cross-references). The model (figure, hairstyle) is the same in all pictures, the light refers to an early morning hour (where such a daring open-air act would probably remain unobserved) and the depicted lakeside is likely at the Wolfgangsee, where Adams often stayed and later also acquired a summer house in St. Gilgen. Based on the similarities, this undated painting is dated here also in 1911. The image from the auction catalog was kindly provided by the Auktionshaus im Kinsky, Vienna.
