This characterful genre painting is undated, but based on the signature and format can be attributed to Adams' middle Volendam period (1901-1911), ca. 1905.The contemplative character and warm tone evoke an image of a peaceful evening of life that is deliberately set apart from the drama of Adams' other Volendam works (see cross-references).
