Left: Back view of an ancient warrior with his right hand holding a spear, the tip of which is tilted downwards. The body is only depicted in outline, only the head with an Attic helmet (with side protection leaving the ears exposed and a neck protection with a rounded edge) with plume and horsehair tail and a cloak gathered at the back are shown in detail and heightened with brown and white.
Right: Left side view of a man in a tunic, his left arm raised and gripping a post, his left foot raised as if about to climb a staircase. Body merely outlined, only the tunic with drapery executed in detail and heightened in white.
The present two academic garment studies from 1895 date from the artist's time as a student at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, where drawings after antiquity were part of the training program. As the present study and the Dessau Prize Adams received in 1893 for the best drawing after antiquity prove, the young artist had already achieved mastery as a draughtsman. The signature with the classic triangular “A” is typical of the student Adams. As an artist, Adams characteristically always signed with an “open A” - Ɑ- which resembles an oblique oval with a side line.
