As the title of the work indicates, the painting shows horse stables, which were co-located with the vast empty (now built-up) drill field of the imperial army "auf der Schmelz" in Vienna. Unfortunately, no image exists of the small-format genre painting shown in the 1986 Adams exhibition. Only a blurred private photograph from 1986 of part of the picture has survived. Legal successors of the lender of the 1986 exhibition (see Provenance) could not be identified so far (both the lender and her daughter have passed away in the meantime). The painting is therefore still being sought.
